Thursday 27th July

The music of legendary powerhouse Joe Cocker will be brought to life when Port Elizabeth's own Francois Hugo backed by the talented Rob Thompson Band hit the stage to pay tribute to the soulful crooner on Thursday, July 27 at The Music Kitchen.

ALBERT FROST

Frost will be performing at Music Kitchen in P.E. on Friday 14th July and J.Bay Brew Co. in Jeffreys Bay on Saturday 15th July. Something not to be missed…

Albert Frost is a familiar and respected feature of the South African blues-rock music scene.

For the past two decades, the energetic performances of this accomplished guitarist have dazzled audiences as he deftly alternates between rhythm and lead, while showcasing acoustic and electric guitars. His first love is blues, stemming from the influence of his long relationship with the Blues Broers with whom he has performed since 1994.

April 2016 saw the release of his much anticipated third solo album, The Wake Up, which, according to Frost, signals the “start of a new journey” for him. In a departure from Frost’s blues roots, The Wake Up explores various musical avenues and lyrical content to create something he says will surprise and excite his fans. The album won in the coveted Best Rock Album category at the 2017 SAMA Awards.

His patent enjoyment of the music he performs and his instruments as well as his charming rapport with the audience, keeps his admirers captivated and returning for more…

KNYSNA OYSTER FESTIVAL 2017

Knysna Tourism has confirmed that the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival is going ahead as planned. Speaking on behalf of the sponsors, the Knysna Municipality and the event organisers, board chairperson Elmay Bouwer said that while the Garden Route town suffered extensive damage in this week’s devastating fires, plans for the festival are on track.

Marketing director for the Momentum Knysna Cycle Tour, Andrew Finn said that, while Knysna has taken a big knock, the Knysna Cycle Tour is still on track with planning and organisation. “Once all the fires have been extinguished, we will be able to assess the situation to see whether it is necessary to alter any of our routes and plans, and all entrants will be updated by email,” he said. “We are looking forward to a great event.” Organiser of The Momentum Knysna Marathon, Leon Brown, confirmed that the marathon would also go ahead. “We are dedicating the event to all the people who lost everything in the fires and will be focusing on our blanket drive. We urge people to add to the 2000 blankets which Momentum donates every year and to also donate clothing which will be collected at registration and at the race start in the Glebe so that it can be distributed where it is most needed. Knysna Tourism is presently assessing the impact of the fires on the local accommodation establishments but is positive that festival goers will be able to find accommodation in and around the town. Visitors can call Knysna Tourism on 044 3825510 for more information.

Bouwer said that it was heartening so see how South Africans across the country have offered support for those who have lost so much in Knysna. “The festival will be a great opportunity for people who want to help our residents to recover from this disaster and we are looking forward to welcoming a record number of people to our beautiful town.”

In the meantime, anyone wishing to assist can take advantage of Pick n Pay’s online shop to purchase groceries and essentials for delivery to those in need. Visit http://www.picknpay.co.za/knysna-fire

German Club 300417BLUES ROCK FEST German Club, PE

The German Club in Port Elizabeth held a Rock and Blues Festival on 30 April 2017 that was filled with great music and a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. The spacious venue allowed for a massive crowd to enjoy a variety of talented musicians as well as the company of good friends, but other than an entertaining lineup, the German Club did a fantastic job of providing a wonderful night all in all. They had everything in order due to their experience in hosting numerous events such as this and many more. Their knowledge played a major role in creating an effective and pleasurable experience.

The news of the festival must have spread like wildfire as the line at the door as well as the venue itself was packed long before the music had even started. The crowd was buzzing with enthusiasm for the evening of music they thoroughly enjoyed to start. Throughout the evening, the music filled the surrounding spaces with a content, enjoyable vibe that lasted ‘til the very last song was played. The bands performing seemed to enjoy themselves as much as we all did.

In a summary of my experience, it was wonderful to see how everyone enjoyed such an eventful evening, seeing friends and families come together to enjoy the music. I am sure I am not only speaking for myself when I say I look forward to the next one.

Ironman 2017IRONMAN SA 2017

01 April 2017

This event has been a favourite on the European race circuit for over a decade. The day begins with a one-lap, 3.8km swim course beginning on Hobie Beach. Athletes head out parallel from the pier and turning left after 300 meters. The course then goes past Humewood Beach all the way to Kings Beach before turning and heading back towards Hobie Beach. The water temperature is usually in the mid-70's and the seas is often calm.

The bike course takes athletes out on two flat, fast laps of 90 km on one of the most spectacular bike courses on the IRONMAN circuit. The route takes athletes along the coast at Marine Drive, delivering sweeping views of the ocean and the rugged coastline along a marine protected area, before moving slightly inland at Seaview on an undulating scenic countryside section.  Athletes return along the coast to the transition area to start the run.

During an awards banquet for the Waikiki Swim Club, John Collins, a Naval Officer stationed in Hawai`i, and his fellow athletes began debating which athletes were the fittest: swimmers, bikers, or runners. Later, he and his wife Judy, who had both participated in new competitions known as triathlons in San Diego, decided to combine three of the toughest existing endurance races on the island. On February 18, 1978, 15 competitors, including Collins, came to the shores of Waikiki to take on the first-ever IRONMAN challenge. arrow back to top grey

JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMBOAT

February 2017

From humble beginnings, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT has gone on to become one of the most recognized musical productions worldwide; has won Tony, Olivier and Drama Desk Awards and has a place in The Guinness Book of Records for the world`s longest running touring musical. The first production in South African in the 1970`s made household names of Richard Loring (The Narrator), Alvon Collison, (Pharaoh) and Bruce Millar, who stole everyone`s heart as Joseph.

The production in 2004|2005 was another first - the beginning of an on-going tradition of `bonsai` musicals conceived by Pieter Toerien for audiences at his theatres in JHB and CPT. Now it`s time, ten years later, to bring back to the stage a newly imagined production of this family favourite that still features all of the fun, light-hearted, magical songs like Any Dream Will Do, Close Every Door To me and One More Angel In Heaven. "A TECHNICOLOR TRIUMPH" for the whole family to enjoy!

an evening with evita bezuidenhoutEVITA BEZUIDENHOUT  Live at the Boardwalk

February 2017

Hilarious Afrikaans socialite and self-proclaimed political activist, Evita Bezuidenhout, is headed straight from Luthuli House to The Boardwalk in February 2017 to enlighten, entertain and inspire fans.

Fans can expect to see Evita focus on women and address the state of family values in this realistically hysterical show, encouraging audiences to remember their roots in order to embrace and celebrate where they are headed.

True to form, Evita never uses bad language or any tasteless references. Instead, with absolute respect, she instils hope in the future of the country and she brings across her point ever so clearly: the people must lead and the government will follow.

In English or Afrikaans, or bilingual with necessary nods in the direction of the other nine official languages, the presentation is ideally 80 to 90 minutes long. Experience has shown that Evita’s talk set against the upsetting political news of the day, creates a successful balance for the audience.

She has been in the lives of South Africans for the last thirty-plus years, since her introduction in 1982 as the South African Ambassador to the Homeland of Bapetikosweti. She is probably the closest we have to the Queen Mother and because she does not use ‘bad’ language or ‘tasteless’ references, her audiences have grown to include citizens from all walks of life, from executives to trade unionists,  reflecting the multi-cultures of South Africa, all united by a diverse and uncomplicated sense of humour. Jokes are funny. The truth can be even more outrageous. Laughing at our fear can help make that fear less fearful.  Confronting the complex and worrying realities of our twenty-two year old democracy with humour has proved to be enriching and enlightening. It is also great arrow back to top greyentertainment.

Prime Circle PE 02PRIME CIRCLE

Let The Night In

23rd December 2016

I was beyond privileged to be able to attend the Prime Circle – Let The Night In show in Port Elizabeth on the 23rd December 2016, and might I add, what a show and what an amazingly talented band! Besides the fact that the Boardwalk Amphitheatre was absolutely packed, the entire atmosphere was vibrant and fired up and couldn’t wait for them to step out on the stage.

I spoke to a group for friends from (PE) who had finally taken their seats as they had been standing outside the Amphitheatre for a while in anticipation to watch their favorite band. I also spoke to a couple who took their seats rather early as Warren (PE) was so excited and had been looking forward to the show for weeks. Much to my surprise, there were many people who had travelled to Port Elizabeth to be part of what Ross Learmouth (Lead Singer) described as one of the best shows they have had in a while due to the fact that the crowd was so involved, he also later admitted to having a ball of a time with us here in the beautiful city of Port Elizabeth. Prime Circle PE 01

The Johannesburg band, who had just celebrated their 16th birthday, opened the show with what was described by a fan sitting close by, as “Very vibey and flawlessly done. It got me more excited for the show than I initially was.” The rest of the show was followed by an incredible setlist, explanations to the meanings and inspiration behind the songs, as well as fair amount of humor from the band which had the crowd in fits of laughter.

As they finish up their Let The Night In tour, which travelled around Europe, we patiently wait for them to grace us with presence and mind blowing talent once again.arrow back to top grey
